Liberal Democrats gain from Labour

A by-election was held for the Sandhill ward of Sunderland City (Metropolitan Borough) Council on 12 January 2017 following the disqualification of Labour Cllr Jacqui Gallagher after failing to attend any council meetings in six months.

Stephen O'Brien gained the seat for the Liberal Democrats.
